The human body contains trillions of cells, which are the building blocks of life. Our cells communicate with each other to perform the bodily functions necessary to survive. Communication between the cells relies on the coenzyme, or helper molecule, NAD+, which helps support many aspects of healthy aging such as: repairing damaged DNA, converting food to energy, aiding with circadian rhythm (your body’s internal clock), and strengthening your body’s defense system.
Unfortunately as we age, NAD+ will naturally decline. By the time you are “middle aged”, there is a high probability that your NAD+ levels have declined to about half of your youthful levels. This decline in NAD+ has been linked to illness and disease associated with aging, such as Alzheimer’s, diabetes, heart disease and even vision loss. A 2017 clinical trial showed that Elysium Basis clinically increased NAD+ levels by an average of 40% in adults aged 60-80 years old, supporting healthy cellular aging.

Research has shown that high levels of homocysteine are correlated with brain atrophy in older adults, which can be regulated by the availability of B vitamins. Elysium recently partnered with the University of Oxford to develop a new product called Matter, a Vitamin B complex used to support brain health during our aging process. As we age, grey matter, which serves to process information in our brain and is responsible for many activities of daily living, such as motor control, balance, learning and memory, will naturally decrease in healthy adults by up to 20%. External factors and lifestyle choices, such as poor sleep, alcohol consumption and smoking can have a significant effect on the rate at which the grey matter in our brains decline. Elysium and University of Oxford conducted a clinical trial using Matter on 168 adults over the age of 70 with mild cognitive concerns. Their research showed that Matter slowed the rate of brain atrophy by 30% and the rate of grey matter atrophy was slowed by an average of 86%.
These promising supplements, when combined with lifestyle modifications, such as better sleep, regular exercise, healthy nutrition, avoiding alcohol consumption and decreased stress should, in theory, allow us to live better, longer.
